I probably should have come across it earlier, but enjoy it anyway :P

This teaser is merely a first look into the world of Halo, but showcases a few stunning scenes depicting what appears to be the attack on the world of Harvest. The movie follows the events of the novel The Fall of Reach, and the teaser displays a couple of brilliant CG shots by director Peter Jackson's Weta Digital.

Animation of any kind can be a long and tedious process. Even when animating aircraft, there is much work involved to fine-tune the flight path for a 'natural' look. With the Craft Airplane plug-in for 3ds max and Maya, real-world simulations of aircraft can be recorded from a simple joystick input.

Craft Airplane records input fromt he pitch, roll, and bank axes, as well as speed (forward and backward), horizontal, and vertical movement.

Craft Airplane can be ordered for $599 or $829 for the extended version.

For a demonstration of the plug-in, click here.

I began watching with the apprehension of being greeted with a simple sequel. Rather, I discovered a powerful story with mind-blowing twists and deep, intriguing adventure covering areas as exotic as Paris, France and Mount Rushmore.
National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets parallels its prequel by revealing some of the events surrounding the Lincoln assassination. Two of John Booth's henchmen approach Thomas Gates (Benjamin Gates great-great granddaddy) and request his help to decipher a coded message. When Thomas discovers that the men belong to a secret Southern society, he brands them as "traitors" and almost destroys the message by throwing it into the fire. In return, he is shot by the conspirators who retrieve the blackened piece of paper.
The story then returns to the present where Thomas Gates is publicly accused of the assassination of Lincoln when the missing page from Booth's diary is revealed. This prompts Benjamin Gates (Nicolas Cage) to find the lost treasure and restore his ancestor's good name.
Opposing him is Jeb Wilkinson (Ed Harris), the descendant of a Confederate general, who is also seeking the treasure. Wilkinson appears as an atypical villain who pursues Gates before realizing that they should work together. Eventually, Wilkinson shows that he is capable of doing good and even risks everything in the face of danger.
Apart from the villain, there are many ways that this movie not only reflects but also builds upon its predecessor. The major characters from the previous movie return for equally stellar performances. Gates again makes his mark as a puzzle-solver and historical extraordinaire.
Gates' audacity continues to be a source of bold action and intrigue. In attempting to find the lost treasure, he again finds himself a wanted man with the FBI desperately attempting to capture him (and only waiting until the end of the film to do it).
Comic relief plays a large role in this film. The action scenes are often punctuated when Ben's sidekick Riley Poole (Justin Bartha) makes a funny remark or gets into an odd situation. There is one scene where security men barge into a bathroom looking for Riley and find another man instead. Also, look for a scene where Ben sticks his hand into a rock crevice and feigns injury.
National Treasure 2 contains many positive elements, which make the film even more exceptional. The theme of family values is strong in this movie as the family members must depend on each other and have faith in each other's abilities. This theme is especially brought to light as Ben's father and mother are forced to reconcile their differences. Self-sacrifice is also an important aspect of this film, appearing when one member of the expedition stays behind to allow the others to escape from an underground chamber.
In addition to these positive themes, the movie is not without negative elements. In the early parts of the film, there is the revelation Ben and Abigail (his girlfriend from the previous movie) have been living together. Also, the character of Ben's mother appears, and it is revealed that she and Ben's father are divorced. In addition, there are some intense scenes that may be inappropriate for not-intense people.
Overall, I would heartily recommend this film to anyone looking for relaxing entertainment. It is, in my opinion, a family film, although some caution should be exercised regarding young children.
Click here for the National Treasure 2 website.
Click here for the National Treasure 2 page on IMDb.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-03-13T12:24:19Z</dcterms:modified>

Blender 3D Design Course

There's a new website dedicated to training in the Blender3D 3D software program. I've recently been checking out prices of laptops, and the beginning of the holiday season seemed like the perfect time seemed like the perfect time to get one.

I found a Lenovo Y410, possibly the last computer that Staples had in-stock. It has a Pentium Dual-Core T2310 (1.46 GHz) processor, 1 GB of RAM, 160 GB HDD, 14.1" Widescreen LCD display, and SuperMulti DVD+R drive with integrated webcam and media card reader. Video card is an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, and the OS is Windows Vista Home Premium.

I had to wait in-line for nearly an hour before buying it. But then, it was totally worth it.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-11-24T06:07:54Z</dcterms:modified>

Chess Pieces Coming To Life

I've studied 3D graphics for well-over one year now. But I have never attempted a significant animation project. With the introduction of a little chess, that will quickly change.
I've now begun to actively work towards the production phase of a new chess animation project. The style is doing to be that of a cartoon, but I feel that the undertaking is bold. Even doing a cartoon-quality project will require vast amounts of time and labor.
One of the things that I feel is important is that most of the crew be located nearby. My experience indicates that if everyone is spread across four continents and six countries, the participants will drift away because of time zones and distance. I will, however, outsource across the Internet if necessary, but in such a case, I prefer to use pre-established connections with artists, rather than use an open forum or message board.
There's still more people to engage in this cartoon, but I feel that most of the crew has been selected, even if they haven't all accepted. I'm still trying to develop a pipeline that's professional, yet informal. I'll be organizing people into positions that are broken down by category (modeling, texturing, animation, etc.). Many of the people will be doing more than one job, but that's part of the learning experience.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-11-13T17:46:27Z</dcterms:modified>

That Darn Cat

This morning my mother picked up a charcoal-gray kitten.
I knew that this could not happen. Especially once Dad came home and found this cat that didn't belong in our house. The only thing to do was to let it out. I opened the screen door on the porch as I was leaving for school. After a bit of coaxing, it hesitantly made its way out. With the job done, I headed across the street to my car.

As I got in and prepared to start the engine, I noticed that the cat had followed me. It was, in fact, headed straight for the car that was within a few seconds of starting. I had no choice but to get the cat away from the car, so I could pull out. After a bit more coaxing, it began to re-cross the street but stopped in the middle of the street. The cat then tilted its head back as I watched and began to preen its fur. I had to now shoo that rascal out of the street before the inevitable vehicle bore down on it.

Fortunately, everything turned out well. I later learned that the cat hung around for quite awhile, but then left. I was telling the story the story all day at the college, and it became an interesting topic of discussion. In the end, it was a nic cat, but I'm increasingly bothered by my mother's 'hospitality.'

My family and I are now on our way to Ohio for a vacation that doesn't feel very fun.

The city where we stayed.
A few days ago, one of my dad's closest friends passed away. So today we started the eight-hour journey to Ohio for his funeral. We left shortly after 4:30 when Dad got home to try to save as much daylight as possible. Even so, it is nearly eight o'clock, and the trip is not yet half over.
Saturday Morning

It is now morning as I continue writing, and because of the lateness of the hour, I was not able to write earlier. We were on the road until approximately 1:30 in the morning with little sleep. At that time, all I wanted to do was sleep.
Saturday Afternoon

I am now sitting here in the motel room while watching some TV. Late this morning there was the graveside ceremony. As we arrived, the first thing that I noticed was the chill in the wind. I had to hug my sports jacket around me to keep warm. There was little surprise in this because the cemetery sat exposed to the wind on a 30 degree slope. But I noticed as the ceremony went on that the wind abated and the sun came out. The sky seemed to be the most brilliant blue. High above the ground, several hawks circled the area as if paying homage. It all seemed to come together in some way that I haven't quite figured out yet.
Sunday Night

The memorial service was last night. It went quite well, punctuated by some excellent singing. After church this morning, we started back to Illinois. On the way, however, we stopped for lunch with my aunt on my mother's side and the cousins.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-09-17T04:41:17Z</dcterms:modified>

Spirit Day

Today was Spirit Day at the college. At this time, the late morning classes were canceled or met to talk about things relating to the school and the students. During my first class, the teacher and one of the deans discussed graduatin and college in general. They shared some experiences and talked about transfers, what to expect in different schools, and so on.

Immediately following everyone left for a student convocation where the faculty members were all present in their caps and gowns. There were more talks on graduation, advice for new students, and repeats of what had been said before. Then everyone moved outside to where all the festivities were being held.

Outside, there was plenty to see and do. The area was mainly filled by various on-campus organizations. There was food and games of all kinds, including pizza, ice cream, an enormous chess set, and even a motion theater displaying various types of flying adventures. At occasional times, there was a contest for students to claim T-shirts and other goodies fired out of a small "cannon."

After that, things quietly cooled down. I went to my last class of the day, math, and then left the campus. By then, everyone had left the activities, which had already been cleaned up, at least in large part.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-08-30T04:12:16Z</dcterms:modified>

The Everything Weekend

This weekend has been filled with enough stuff to last for a week!
The renovations are now in the second week, and everything seems to be going well. As usual, Saturday was spent doing what we could to fix up the place. We now have an industrial-grade steamer on loan from the hardware store, which loosens the wallpaper and paint in double-quick time. Both of the bedrooms have new ceilings, as well as the hallway.
There's been a lot of water in the basement, though. It just keeps coming in through the walls, the floor, or whatever. After the water dried, one of my friends and I carried junk out of one of the basement rooms. Most of it was part of some old shower that never got put in.
Add to that my recent computer problems, and it was really shaping up to be the pits. On that same Saturday, our computer was attacked by a number of different viruses. None of us were quite sure what to do about it. It was so bad that almost no work could be done on that machine!
But then came the trip on Sunday. It was supposed to be a simple ride with my parents up to an open house hosted by a local university. It turned out to be a nightmare as my dear father passed up the street twice, and it took us an hour-and-a-half through heavy traffic to arrive at the right building, the Intercontinental.
The Intercontinental was located along scenic Michigan Avenue, a.k.a. "The Magnificent Mile," which was "magnificently" hard to get to. We quickly found our way to the King Arthur Court Ballroom and made our way in. The staff was cordial and related the basics and beyond of what I needed to know about the school.
After getting back to our car, it took us about the same amount of time to leave the city as it did to enter it. By that time, however, I was almost too tired to care.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-08-29T04:59:08Z</dcterms:modified>

First Day of School

Here I am at the beginning of my first year of full-time college life. That first day after summer is always hard because I always have to change my routine completely in ust one day. Such is the way of life, they say.

Today I had the usual confusion, the finding of classes, the bumbling into the wrong class, that sort of thing. Fortunately, everything went mostly pretty well.

The first class, science, was great. Everyone said that the teacher was good, and I found myself agreeing. He explained everything about the class and seemed very amiable. One strange thing, though, was that there was a sign language interpreter, which was a new experience for me.

Another strange thing was that the English class was in a computer lab. This did make some sense because of the commonplace nature of word processing. Still, though, I got misdirected and confused until I spotted a faculty member that I knew who was gracious enough to confirm the room number.

There was another class, math, but I had little trouble or excitement there. The teacher was, at least, fair, and I succeeded in staying interested and focused on what was going on. I did, however, end up short one of the materials, which necessitated a visit to the bookstore before I could complete future assignments.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-08-20T21:57:53Z</dcterms:modified>

Work Day

I’ve spent the weekend renovating the house mentioned earlier. It’s been a lot of work, and much more still remains. Fortunately, there's been a group from the church helping out. The last few days would have turned out very differently without them.

On Saturday, the basement was cleaned and partly painted with a sealant designed to keep out moisture. Old wooden walls were knocked down in the same area and left to be picked up later. Meanwhile, we began to strip the wallpaper in my new room and examine the underlying walls. The hallway ceiling was taken down, and the entrance to the attic moved.

Today (Sunday), the wallpaper in the hallway started coming down, though the linoleum underneath is still intact in places. The junk in the basement now combined with plaster and shredded wallpaper from the upper story and was thrown out a piece at a time.

The work has proceeded well for the most part, though the extent of the building's poor condition is only now becoming apparent. To summarize the general feeling of my family and friends: IT ALL MUST GO! I know that soon it will all be over, but that time is still a long way away.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-08-20T03:21:13Z</dcterms:modified>

New House

Yesterday, my family bought a new house. It's quite a bit bigger than our current apartment with three floors, though some of the rooms are smaller. We've already started moving in, because the new place is less than mile away. The whole house is like a relic, with an old-style furnace and light fixtures that look like a throwback to gas lamps.

One of the nice things, though, is that there are plenty of closets. Each upstairs bedroom has a walk-in (sort of) wardrobe and unfinished attic space. I'll post some pictures when I can.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-08-16T20:05:04Z</dcterms:modified>

Looking Back - A Cookie, a Swordsman, And a Whack Job

One year ago, an auspicious undertaking took place: the making of a short film. While not particularly noteworthy or glamorous, it was nonetheless a great experience for all those involved.
Last May one of my friends presented me with a script, titled A Cookie, a Swordsman, And a Whack Job. I looked through it and decided that it was perfect for a short film project.
The next few months were spent deciding on the crew, revising the script, getting software and equipment, and making other preparations. My "co-conspirator" Megan suggested asking our mutual friend Will to be the camera operator, which turned out to be an excellent decision. Meanwhile, I began reading up on filmmaking and gaining experience at a nearby chapel.
Finally, we were ready and the first shoot date was set for Monday, August 14, 2006. That afternoon we began shooting the first three scenes and worked against time as the sun moved away from the east-facing windows. Even though I was directing, Megan showed ample ability to lay out the action in the script. By the end of that day, we only had 11 1/2 minutes of recorded tape to show for about 2 hours.
After the shooting was over, the long editing process began. Everything came along well, but some of the crew members had regular jobs, and it was difficult to arrange a time to finish the project. However, on October 29, the second shoot date was set. I moved the process along quickly because of the difficulty involved in arranging meetings and all the thought that went into the video since August.
Several revisions later, the final cut came into being. I had already gotten into other interests and the date of the premiere was set for January 21, 2007. Unfortunately, that day was also Super Bowl Sunday, and not everyone was willing to watch Muppet Treasure Island while the DVD finished burning. Also, Megan was off with her family out of town that day and thus not present.
My advice to aspiring filmmakers? Always prepare. Know every detail about all the scenes. Know the camera(s) used. Know if you need any other equipment. Know how competent your cast and crew is. Sometimes you just need a planning session or a walkthrough of the technical aspects of the production.
Resources:
Script (requires Adobe Reader)
CSWJ video

The annual Sweet Corn Festival is only just finishing. It's seemingly non-stop fun and noise. The vendors were selling food and wares to anyone who passed by, and amusement park rides offered excitement to anyone brave enough to try.
Well, let me start by telling you about the beginning. It was Thursday, and the festival was only just beginning. My dog Sam and I took a walk through the place and experienced the sounds and the smells wafting from open grills and old-style ice cream machines. The spinning, racing, swinging rides did everything to promote the taste of excitement and anticipation in the air.
On Friday, the festivities were in full swing. Although there wasn't much to do before noon, I only needed to look out my second-story window to see that everything was very much alive. In the evening, there were crowds almost everywhere. My father said that the fair was relatively deserted, but I didn't much care. There was a band concert on a large stage by a nearby park, and music boomed along the streets. I joined up with some friends and later went on the bumper cars ride. I can't say that I was particularly miserable that night.
Saturday was a real treat. One of the highlights was a magician who always performed on the street corner nearest to the apartment that I live in. I knew that it was time to unpack the trusty video camera and record the well-known variation of the "cut-people-in-half" routine. Instead of a box, there was only a cape for the assistant and an arched block of wood for the drill saw to rest on.
After dinner, there was another concert performance by "Captain Groovy." They did a lot of old songs from the '70s; I would've stayed longer, but there was a movie on later. lol
Sunday was really the big day. After church in the morning, I came back to find almost no parking spots within 4 or 5 blocks of downtown. I was really surprised to find a spot less than a block away from the south end of the festival. It was, however, almost right in front of the police station. I ate lunch and then got ready for the big parade.
Before the parade, I again met up with some friends to hand out Bible tracts. Once the floats started coming by, I mainly settled down to watch. There were the police cars and the fire trucks of course, but there were also many corn-themed floats as well!

Once the parade ended, though, there was still the main highlight of that weekend. Almost everyone rushed back to the main festival grounds where an old steam engine was used to cook roughly 80 tons of sweet corn. I had had quite enough, however, and preceded back home (about 50 feet from where the corn was dished out) for some much needed rest. That evening I went swimming to conclude such a long and exciting weekend!

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-08-14T01:46:18Z</dcterms:modified>

DS Paint

As a gamer and graphics enthusiast, it doesn't take much to get me excited about Bob Sabiston's new drawing program, exclusively for the Nintendo DS. The DS has formerly featured stylus-driven paint options in its games, but there has not been any officially released game specifically designed for drawing, despite various "homebrew" applications released over the Internet.

The game will apparently be able to handle simple cartoon-style drawings, as well as realistic portraits.

The software will also use a type of "flip-book style" animation. Sound will be provided through the system's built-in microphone, and Wi-Fi will offer online storage for the users' art. The DS's top screen will show an overview of the entire "canvas," while the bottom screen will provide a detailed close-up of one area.

This could be a really popular program as it does away with expensive drawing tablets and special operating systems for the computer. The simplicity of it is quite refreshing. However, a release date has not been announced at the time of this writing.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-08-12T04:19:08Z</dcterms:modified>

Bridge to Terabithia

I recently watched a movie called Bridge to Terabithia. This was an excellent movie, showing the unique friendship of two people, the powerful way that they use their imaginations, and the contrast between their families. Also present is the way that people really react to difficulty and hardship.

Jess Aarons (played by Josh Hutcherson) is a pre-teen boy living on a farm who is constantly bullied at school; the only bright spot at school is his success as an athlete and runner. However, he is beaten when the new girl joins the all-male team at the starting line and races ahead of everyone else. Jess soon learns that the girl, Leslie Burke (AnnaSophia Robb), lives nearby, and they again race down a country road and into the woods that envelop the countryside. They come to a creek where Leslie spies an old rope and decides that it will be their gateway, or "bridge," to the wonderful and mystical land of Terabithia.

Jess and Leslie become friends when Jess helps her avoid one meanest girls in 8th grade (Janice). Leslie sees Jess' art and is one of the few people who supports his hobby. Leslie is also the one who cheers Jess' spirits when he feels down. One could say that Jess' art are what draw the two together.

The land of Terabithia provides a sort of "escape" for Jess and Leslie. Their adventures provide a means of fighting the bullies at school and giving them a sense of hope. Jess always feels encouraged when visiting the secret place in the woods and repairing the broken-down treehouse. The human need to improve one's surroundings is evinced by Leslie's idea to get bells for their secret treehouse. There is also a distinct line between the real world and the "imagined" computer-generated one, but the graphics seem to blend in perfectly without drawing attention to themselves.

There is a distinct contrast between Jess' family and Leslie's. Jess' father is portrayed as a hard man who largely ignores Jess and gives him little pity for much of the film. The only love appears to be directed towards the younger daughter, and Jess' other two sisters are found to be vain, superficial girls who are only interested in clothes and boys. Leslie's family, however, is seen as a fun-loving, happy family when Jess visits while they are re-painting their house.

When Jess encounters trouble in his life, he is realistically portrayed in the light of a touchy, emotional boy that instantly draws sympathy from the audience. His family really comes together and changes to become quieter and more thoughtful. Ultimately, though, Jess overcomes his fear and anger to become closer to those around him.

At one point in the film, Jess mentions that he goes to church, and Leslie decides to go along deciding that it will be "fun." Leslie is not disappointed, thinking the story of God's enduring love to be "beautiful." However, Maybel, Jess' sister, is quick to point out that if you don't believe the Bible "God will damn you to hell when you die." Leslie doesn't believe this, indicating the beauty of God's creation as if God were limited to just the excellent acts in the world. Neither of these viewpoints are complete views of God. Perhaps the best way to reconcile these ideas is that the beauty of God's virtue cannot abide the depravity of man's sin.

This is truly a wonderful movie, one to watch again and again. The great aspects are all there, from the great acting, the deep relationships, the breathtaking scenery, and the excellent portrayal of family life. All said, this is an excellent movie that everyone should try to watch.

See what you’re getting into…before you go there. Check it out!
My home is an essentially one-story storefront apartment, a few blocks from a railroad depot.

Let's see, I happen to be an avid Star Wars fan. I challenge anyone to present something about Star Wars that I don't know. I also know just about every detail of the five battles of Coruscant. I've probably read a majority of the non-juvenile Star Wars books, and I own four of the movies (3-6), as well as watched my share of fanfilms.

I've been on a 3D graphics 'kick' for nearly a year. I'm not very proficient, but I've studied nearly everything I could find on the subject. I also have a small team of computer gurus, one of whom I've never met in person.

I'm also interested in the fields of computer programming and machinima (the making of movies and other media through video games). I like fishing as well, despite not having caught anything for most of my life.

Now, though, I stand upon the proverbial "threshold of my life," the point where up becomes down and nothing makes sense anymore. I'm 18 and a recent HS graduate. For those who haven't reached this stage yet, it's like being shoved down a dark corridor like in the movies, with a glowing door at the end. And you can feel yourself being shoved closer and closer towards this door. But you're confused. Where is the door? Is it the right one? And how will I know?

But I try not to dwell on that too much. For I have a Guide that gives me stability in life. List: Fav Movies

Fav Movies

Arthur and the Invisibles

<a animated movie. I really don't think that it has received enough credit. I feel that the film lacks development in some areas, but nevertheless, it's a really heartwarming story. For those who haven't seen it, it's about a boy searching for his grandfather and a way to save his grandparents' farm, a "rough-and-tumble" princess trying to save the kingdom that will soon be hers, and an evil lord seeking revenge. This video is not something that I will soon forget.

Bridge to Terabithia

The Last Mimzy

National Treasure:
